There are many technological tools on the market today geared towards parents who wish to help educate and entertain their children. Computers have become a big part of that technology, from the more simplistic portable computerized toys to actual computer applications designed to help children acquire useful skills while promoting fun. Interactive books are among those applications.

The concept of the interactive book is simple; to help provide children with the fun stories they have come to love, while allowing them to interact with the characters in a way that makes the experience more real and more fun. While most interactive books are available online, there are also other mediums for such reading material.

The interactive book began with simple talking books. These books allowed children to read while listening to a recorded version of the story. The recording came complete with sound effects and character voices which enhanced the actual reading experience. It also helped those children who did not know how to read or had difficultly reading to enjoy the story.

Now, the interactive books that are available via the Internet take this idea one step further. By using a mouse, your child is now able to actually take part in the story and interact with the characters. Computer images make the story come alive, while the written words are displayed on the screen. Character voices are also heard. All of these features help give the story an added dimension, and help walk the child through the various experiences of each character. Interactive books also provide your child the opportunity to learn more about the computer, and can help prepare him or her for the use of the everyday technology that is becoming more and more familiar all the time.

There are many sites that offer interactive books, so finding one to suit your child should not be difficult. You can also find various resources on the Internet that will lead you to other similar sites and materials, all of which are designed with children in mind. You will also be able to choose books that match your child's skill level, and compliment his or her interests. The options are numerous, and choosing books online can be even more fun than the traditional method of checking them out from a library. This is not, however, meant to discourage traditional library use, but is meant as another avenue by which to instill in your children a love of reading that will serve them all their lives.
