If you are planning to travel in the near future, the first thing that you look at is whether you have the proper luggage to carry along. Shopping for the required luggage is an arduous task if you are unaware of what is available in the market. There is a large variety of luggage available today to suit your every need. Choosing the correct bag according to your requirement and budget is very important to avoid regretting it at the time of traveling.

The most important consideration for luggage is its size. Catering to the various requirements of consumers, luggage comes in all possible sizes and you can make your choice depending on how long you will be away and what kind of clothing you will require. What most people look for today are luggage sets, classified on the basis of their structure, shape and size. Typically, a luggage set consists of a certain number of standardized items. It usually includes two suitcases of different sizes, a garment bag designed to carry clothes with hangers, the length of the bag in varying sizes of 40, 54 and even 60 inches and a Carry-On, which is like a miniature suitcase to add on to the suitcase. Having the similar shape and wheeling advantages of a suitcase, a carry-on luggage is designed to be of use on an airplane journey. Generally it measures somewhere around 22" to act as favorable luggage in transit journeys. Lastly, a Tote or Sport bag, which can be used for traveling by car or as a beach bag, large handbag or shopping carrier.

After deciding on the luggage set for the journey the concern should shift to the quality and type of set. The quality of the luggage set is very crucial as it decides the durability and robustness of the luggage so as it will serve well in the long run. The quality of luggage material is decided by the material used for its manufacture. Generally there are three basic materials used for luggage manufacturing: Hard-Sided, Semi-Soft-Sided and Soft-Sided.

Hard-Sided luggage is usually formed by the molding of plastic or metal, forming a case structure bordered by metallic or wooden frames. Due to the hardness of the basic material, hard-sided luggage sets are the most durable of all the three types and are used increasingly by the frequent long-distance travelers. This luggage is pretty hard from the outside and is designed to handle shocks easily. The basic problem with hard-sided luggage is their lack of flexibility.

Semi-Soft-Sided luggage is partially-framed versions of the hard-sided luggage since they are hard overall but have softened top and bottom sides. The softness factor of this type allows slight expansion and thus greater room for more stuff to be packed inside without compromising its contents. These are made up of leather - natural or processed or fibers - natural or manufactured.

The Soft-Sided cases are, as their name suggests, soft. They are expandable, weigh the least but are less durable than the other types. Many of them have artificial stiffeners added to the fabric in order to hold them up more firmly.

After deciding the type and material of the luggage set you would like, you will need to decide where you would like to buy it from. Most regular departmental stores sell luggage sets at fairly reasonable prices. The other options are the specialty luggage stores providing a good range of products, some even dealing in custom made orders. There are scores of designer boutiques selling exquisitely designed luggage - and of course, these come at fancy prices. Other options include a list of prominent big names like Sam's Club, Target, Costco, and Wal-Mart and a few small scale retailers like Steinmart, Kohls, T.J. Maxx, and Tuesday Morning offering limited ranges at affordable prices.
