It used to be that television was comprised of a few local channels that broadcast network programming and nothing more. Even with rabbit ears, they hardly came in clear at all. Then cable hit the airwaves and connection has been made between the PC and the TV. These sites typically restrict how viewers watch content.

For example, some sites will only allow users to view content on their computers while others will permit burning to DVD. Prices for downloads are generally set on a per purchase or show basis, which makes this option great for those who have missed a single episode of a favorite show or even those who just want to check a series out before making a commitment to buy a season for viewing.

* Streaming sites: In addition to download sites that enable the purchase of single episodes, there are a bevy of sites that offer streaming video for viewing. These videos are available around the clock, generally, and typically cost nothing. Streaming sites can range from actual network web sites to those that provide user generated content in addition to network programs. Generally, steaming videos are free of charge, unless they are provided in conjunction with the next class of sites.

* Unlimited access sites: Some computer television download services provide memberships for customers that allow unlimited access to a whole host of actual downloads or streams or even a combination of the two. These services can charge by the month, the year or offer a one-time purchase fee. Once the fees are paid, users are free to watch as much or as little as they want whenever they want to.

How these videos play will depend on the service in question. For example, some will not enable download to portable devices and others will even provide burning software to enable the viewing of content directly from DVD players.

* Peer-to-peer sites: These sites generally specialize in user generated content only. They will not typically offer copyrighted material for legal reasons, but they do provide a whole host of fresh and interesting content.

As computer television becomes the method of choice for viewing by thousands and thousands of people around the world, the options are rapidly improving. Where there was once only a few options available, there is now literally content from all over the globe available for computer television fans. From the best Hollywood has to offer to local productions made in garages, this medium offers it all.
