A beloved friend or family member is having a baby and you are planning her shower.

Most of the invited guests are young, single women; long time pals who know nothing about burp cloths, bottles and blankets. Instead of a traditional baby shower, plan a “mommy party” that focuses on the mom to be and her fun-loving friends.

Plan on hosting a day entirely for mom. Have the guests center their attentions on the expectant parents and incorporate all themes, decorations and gifts for the adults. If the party is not a surprise, sit down with the guest of honor to discuss her expectations. Make sure to cater the event towards her personality and preferences.

If this is her second child, mom may have all the baby gear she needs. In these cases, give her something she may enjoy. Some ideas include: gift certificates for manicure and pedicure treatments; aromatherapy candles and bath products for relaxation; or movie passes for an evening date with dad. Have her friends help you create a personalized hospital tote bag full of treats. Include items like her favorite music, snacks, books, slippers and pajamas.

Turn the shower into an elegant Sunday morning brunch and tea party. Serve a variety of teas and finger foods. Decorate the tables with unique, colorful teacup and saucer sets, elegant linens and beautiful floral arrangements.

Being pregnant can take its toll on the body. Treat the mom-to-be to a day of luxury and hold a “Pampering Mommy” party at an elegant spa. Find a place that offers treatments for pregnant women and get her the full package of services. All the guests can indulge in a massage, manicure or mud bath.

If an evening event is more your style, host a virgin martini and movie party. Serve a variety of non-alcoholic, mixed drinks, such as Strawberry Daiquiris, Cosmopolitans and Margaritas, and show some of the new mom’s favorite films.

A “mommy shower” can be as simple as a “girl’s night out” on the town. Gather friends and family and arrange a dinner at the expectant mother’s favorite restaurant, treat her to a shopping spree, or organize an evening at the ballet.

A baby shower does not need to be the typical affair of games and gifts. Consider a more adult occasion, with all attention focused on the mom to be.
